  • J1 2009: Microsoft Keynote

J1 Host Chris Milissinos opens with reminders about the extreme changes the Internet habe brought to our world… and how our kids will only know a connected world.

Microsoft’s Dan’l Lewin Corporate VP, Strategic & Emerging Busines Development. Apparently this is the first ever keynote from MS at JavaOne! Stresses importance of collaboration. Themes: Interoperability, Customer Choice, Collaboration.
Ongoing activities: Sun/Microsoft Interop Center. Support for Java on Windows (specifically Windows 7) is apparently as important as ever. See www.interoperabilitybridges.com

Steven Martin, Senior Director, Dave Platform Product Management, MS. Uses expression „We come in peace!“ which gets a laugh. Talks about stages of Interoperability.

    1. Don’t need it
    2. Wish I had it
    3. Have it in places
    4. Need it in more places
    5. Have it…

… but notes that it was damn difficult to get here [Blogger agrees!]. SM observes that beyond the specs it esssentially comes down developers to implement the final bits of plumbing. Talks of Apache Project Stonehenge. Designed to achieve component-level interoperability.

Greg Leak, MS; Harold Call, Sun deliver a Stock Trader demo of „interopability of distributed apps“ using Stonehenge. Stonehenge is the product of a major collaboration between Sun and MS.

Talks about SOA Interopability between .NET 3.5 and Glassfish/Metro [see slide].

Evolution of computation: Mainframe; C/S; Phone; Cloud.
Aisling MacRunnels, Senior VP, Software Marketing, Sun talks with SM about the deep commitment to getting Java and .NET to work together. Another example: JavaFX Mobile running on Windows Mobile (shows developer phone.) AM finishes by saying that Windows will run as a „guest OS“ on the Sun cloud.

Some thank-you packs are thrown out… unfortunately way over the heads of the folks in the VIP section.
