According to this IDC report, companies that use RIA instead of traditional Web applications can double their online sales:

Expert users benefit the most
Rich Internet Applications address the needs of professional web users: The productivity of employees that use online applications daily and for long stretches of time (web workers) improves substantially if offered a better, visual user interface. According to this Forrester report, Rich Internet Applications will play a direct role in improving information workplaces:

RIA workplaces offer a "seamless, individualized, and highly visualized user experience". They can map company processes more closely than current company portals and office software.

RIA sample application: Buzzword
Buzzword (http://www.buzzword.com/) an online word processor is an example of a successful Rich Internet Application. The application is based on Adobe's Flash, Flex, and AIR technologies. Users access the software by means of a hyperlink and can open, write, and edit documents just like in MS Word. A local installation of the Buzzword software is not required. Like Google Docs, the documents are accessible online.
Buzzword was purchased by Adobe in October 2007.For further details see:

Statistics on the use and acceptance of RIA plugins
Are there any studies or reports on the acceptance of plug-ins? How many people download and use plugins such as the Adobe Flash Player?
- According to Adobe, 90% of all Internet users have installed the Flash Player 9.0.
- The Sun Microsystems website reports that over 91% of internet-connected PCs have Java enabled.
Most public reports are based on vendor statistics and the numbers need to be taken with a pinch of salt. Discuss this topic in more detail here:
