Canoo Announces Release of Ultra Light Client Version 5.1

Basel, Switzerland – September 24, 2002. Canoo today announced the release of Ultra Light Client (ULC) version 5.1, a thin-client framework based on Java and Swing. ULC extends HTML-based Web architectures with rich GUI clients.

Thin clients are essential to streamline software development and deployment in today's net-centric world. HTML clients are widely used, but have limited GUI capabilities and are often expensive to develop. ULC overcomes this deficiency by offering a rich GUI extension for Web applications.

ULC combines the advantages of fat clients, such as homogeneous development and superior user interface with the advantages of HTML such as simplified architecture and server-side deployment.

"ULC enables you to efficiently develop client-server applications with a rich GUI similar to Swing. However, unlike fat clients, ULC applications can be deployed in any J2EE compliant Web or EJB container. On the client, the user interface is managed by a small generic Java-based presentation engine. ULC takes your fat clients to J2EE without compromising on the user interface," said Bruno Schaeffer, CTO of Canoo.

Release 5.1 includes the following new features:
  • new tree component and substantially improved table and table-tree components; this upgrade further
  • improves ULC’s equivalence to the Swing API;
  • further reduced network traffic between the UI Engine and the server;
  • integration into IBM’s WebSphere Studio development environment.
